Is Sierra Burgess truly a Loser?

Blog Post 3

Netflix’s new film, Sierra Burgess is a Loser, was one of this fall’s most highly-anticipated films. In it, an unpopular girl named Sierra is contacted by an attractive boy named Jamey. The two converse and, of course, develop feelings for each other. The catch is that Jamey thinks Sierra is actually a girl named Veronica, who is a popular cheerleader at Sierra’s school. This is where things start to take a turn for the worst. As a result of catfishing (i.e. pretending to be someone you’re not online), awkward kisses happen, feelings are definitely hurt, and friendships are almost lost. However, Sierra is completely forgiven for everything pretty much for just writing a song that expresses how she “feels like a sunflower when you (Jamey) wanted a rose”. This ending has caused many people to oppose the film, even calling out one of the scenes as a form of sexual assault. Certainly, this is not the reaction Netflix was aiming for. One thing this film has certainly done is shown everyone that they should be true to themselves rather than fake everything for love.
